10 Creative Writing Prompts

AJ Writer Copyediting
- Henry David Thoreau

Writer's block is very real and in order to become a better writer you have to write every day. Every day. I put together a short list of writing prompts to help motivate you and give you something to write about on a daily basis. Whether you keep a journal, write stories or blog, these prompts will allow you to expand your horizons and stretch your imagination.

Here are 10 writing prompts to motivate and inspire:

  1. At a garage sale, your character buys an antique urn which she thinks will nicely decorate her bookcase. But when she gets home, she realizes there are someone's ashes in it...
  2. Your character starts receiving flowers and anonymous gifts. She doesn't know who is sending them. Her husband is suspicious, and the gifts begin to get stranger...
  3. Make a list of five things you're afraid of happening to you. Then write a story in which one of them happens to your character...
  4. It's a freezing cold night. Your character finds a homeless family on his doorstep and invites them into his home to sleep. But in the morning, the family doesn't leave...
  5. Your character suspects her husband is having an affair and decides to spy on him. What she discovers is not what she was expecting...
  6. A babysitter is snooping around her employer's house and finds a disturbing photograph...
  7. Your character is a 20-something-year-old Caucasian male. He falls in love with a beautiful African-American woman and plans to marry her, but both of their families are racist...

Combine the three elements to create a short story:
  1. A taxi, a pair of binoculars and a scream
  2. An old enemy, a photograph and a hug that goes too far
  3. A life insurance policy, a stolen ring and aerobics

More prompts will be added regularly. For now, let one or more of these prompts help to get your creative juices flowing.
